The Tax Lists!

You might be wondering what you can learn from finding your ancestor in a tax list. Taxes were collected every year so they can fill in some blanks between the census years. You can more accurately pinpoint the time your ancestor moved into or out of a community by tracing him each year through the tax lists. If he was getting older but you know he was still alive and hadn't moved away but he isn't listed in the tax list then you might want to check for a court record indicating that he had been excused from further taxes because of "great age" or for another reason. In some cases you will even be able to discover the year of his death and possibly the unknown first name of his wife if she is listed the following year paying taxes on the same land. Depending on the questions asked in a particular year you will learn things like how much land he owned and where, how many horses or cattle he owned, or the number of school age children in his household, how many, if any, slaves he owned and of course you'll see the amount he was taxed in each case. Again depending on the year, all taxable males in each county were required to pay a "tithe" if they were at least 21 (or even 16) years of age whether or not they owned land or a horse, so in many cases you can get an idea of the year of birth of a man by finding when he first appears on the tax lists. Quite often, but not always, the first time a male is required to be taxed he is listed immediately before or after his father. So don't neglect checking the tax lists as you search for your ancestors.
